On March 13, 2019, Jamiatul Ulama South Africa (JUSA) partnered with Gift of the Givers to deliver six toilet cubicles to Enseleni Primary School near Kranskop in KZN's Midlands region. The initiative addresses critical school sanitation challenges affecting rural communities.
More than 4,000 schools across the country still use and rely on pit latrines that are often unsafe for young learners. Children have suffered fatal incidents from unstable facilities, yet progress remains limited in rural areas, particularly across Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo provinces.
Educators welcomed the intervention, describing it as transformative. The facility installation included four VIP (Ventilated Improved Pit) toilets and two Pour-Flush cubicles. VIP toilets feature ground-level seating with ventilation outlets reducing odour, exceeding standard pit latrine design.
Beyond sanitation, rural learners face interconnected challenges: insufficient water, malnutrition, overcrowded classrooms, inadequate healthcare, and elderly guardianship. JUSA intends expanding this project nationally to promote educational dignity and community health.
To support the Toilets 4 Schools initiative, donations in the form of Lillah, Sadaqah, and Zakaah are welcomed through JUSA's designated accounts.
