The elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa concluded this afternoon, alhamdulillah.
Just under 300 participants attended the event held at the Johannesburg Muslim School where reports of the various departments and agencies were presented, following the Amir’s Address, given by the interim president, Moulana Heider Ali Dhorat. Moulana Dhorat outlined how Jamiatul Ulama-i-Hind became a model for the Ulama body, through its multi-faceted initiatives for the advancement of Muslim interests and protection of the Deen.
After the presentation of the reports, eligible members cast their ballots to elect office bearers to serve in the executive committee of the Ulama body, for the next four years, in-sha-Allah.
The electoral process which had begun months ago with a call for nominations, saw a number of positions filled uncontested, as it was announced during August. The rest of the open positions were then put to a vote and the following is the complete list of new office-bearers:
President: Moulana Ebrahim Ismail Bham
First Deputy President: Moulana Ayoob Mohammed
Second Deputy President: Moulana Ebrahim Pandor
First Assistant Secretary: Moulana Sulaimaan Mohammed Ravat
Second Assistant Secretary: Moulana Obeidullah Bhoja
Treasurer: Moulana Heider Ali Dhorat
Secretary General: Moulana Yusuf Ismail Patel
Assistant Treasurer: Moulana Ismail Varachia
Participants who included Ulama, huffaaz, representatives of jamaats and individuals from business and professions, had the opportunity to ask questions and offer input at the end. They engaged in a panel discussion which addressed the question of Islamophobia as a growing concern in South Africa.
May Allah accept the efforts of the predecessor members whose vision led to the establishment of the Ulama body, offering various services to the community, now for 103 years. We pray for the guidance of JUSA, its leadership and membership, so that it continues to serve its mandate, for the Sake of Allah SWT.
Soon after the confirmation of the office-bearers, Moulana Ebrahim Bham paid tribute the predecessors whose stewardship has seen the growth of the Ulama body, as shown by the level of organisation and wide-ranging scope of activities, in the service of the Deen. He appealed to the members for continued support of JUSA under his leadership, so that its achievements are consolidated as a platform for on-going and future work. He reiterated JUSA’s open-door policy where mutual understanding can be realised through engagement.
