AN UUCSA URGENT CALL TO ACTION Introduction The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has extended the public comment period on the draft History Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS). This is a rare and critical opportunity for the Muslim community of South Africa to ensure that our history – and the diverse contributions of Muslims to this nation – is recognised and included. Your voice is important and needed. Why This Matters Currently, the draft curriculum risks omitting or underrepresenting the role of Muslim leaders, community institutions, and activists in the struggle against colonialism and apartheid, as well as the broader shaping of South African society. In an official submission to the DBE, the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) has outlined key areas that require stronger treatment and they include: The role of political exiles, enslaved people, indentured labourers, and migrant workers— many of whom were Muslims— in shaping our nation; Community-based educational, ethical, and social institutions that fostered literacy, social cohesion, and resilience; Religious leaders, activists, and local communities in resistance movements, and Neglected local case studies that reveal the rich, and inclusive nature of South African history. What You Can Do, Right Now 1. Write a brief submission (even 2–3 paragraphs help) to the DBE, highlighting one or more of the following: A Muslim personality or leader who contributed to the struggle (e.g., Imam Abdullah Haron, Sheikh Yusuf of Macassar, Fatima Meer, or local figures from your community); A masjid, madrasa, or Muslim social institution that played a role in community resilience or education; A local historical event involving Muslims that should be taught in schools. Please visit: https://bit.ly/TeachingOurStories , for more information and a submission template. 2. Send your submission to: Ms Florence Modipa Email: modipa.f@dbe.gov.za CC: Your local ulama body or community organisation 3. Share this call with your family, friends, WhatsApp groups, madrasa networks, and social media platforms. Suggested Short Submission Template Subject: Public Comment on History CAPS— Inclusion of Muslim Contributions Dear Ms Modipa, I am a member of the Muslim community in [City/Town/Province]. I support the call to strengthen the History curriculum by including [name of person/ event/ institution]. [Add 2–3 sentences on why such inclusion matters.] Please ensure that the final curriculum reflects the full diversity of South Africa's past. Thank you, [Your Name & Community Affiliation] Deadline: The extended deadline is Tue 19 May 2026. However, kindly submit as soon as possible. Please, do not wait. Our History is being Written Now If we do not contribute to the record of our past, our stories may be erased. Every submission counts. Let us ensure that future generations of South Africans— Muslim and non-Muslim alike— learn a complete, honest, and inclusive history. May Allah bless our efforts to preserve truth and justice. Please act today.
