The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa (JUSA) partnered with the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa, the Muslim AIDS Programme, and the University of Johannesburg's Department of Podiatry to host a Health and Wellness Day for the Riverlea community.
Screenings and Services
The event offered comprehensive health screenings, including blood pressure and blood glucose testing to help identify risk factors requiring ongoing management. Participants also had access to HIV/AIDS counselling and voluntary testing services, in line with national strategies aimed at reducing the spread of the virus.
A Focus on Women's Health
Women attending the day benefitted from additional screening for indicators of cervical cancer risk, using the pap smear procedure.
“Women particularly benefitted from the exercise as additional tests for indicators of the risk of cervical cancer were also performed, using the pap smear procedure.”
Why Awareness Matters
JUSA emphasised that awareness initiatives such as this help community members understand their health risk factors, enabling them to take preventative steps or manage existing conditions before they become more serious.
“JUSA branches collaborate with healthcare professionals and volunteers in conducting Health and Wellness Day events in their respective regions.”
Events like the one held in Riverlea form part of JUSA's ongoing commitment to community welfare, bringing free, accessible healthcare services directly to the people who need them most.
